Maintenance of today’s wood floors is easy! Chicago hardwood floor care has new technology in stains and finishes that calls for easy/regular cleaning that requires little more than sweeping and/or vacuuming, with occasional use of a professional wood floor cleaning product that we promote like Bona products. You will want to use a cleaning product that is recommended by your wood flooring professional, cause each floor is different and requires a specific product. This will ensure that you use the proper cleaner for your type of flooring and finish cleaning needs.

Hardwood floors are generally easy to maintain. You just need to remember that ‘water’ and the ‘sun’ is the biggest enemy of hardwood floors. Your floors can bow, warp, shift, and lose their luster if you allow them to get wet or damaged. The best way to avoid these problems is to wipe up any and all spills with a dry cloth and never use a wet mop to clean the floors. Keep floors dirt free with a broom or vacuum and only use cleaning products that are safe and pH balance for hardwood floor care.

You can also extend the life of your wood floors by placing rugs in high traffic areas. If you are moving furniture around the room, make sure you use lift any and all furniture when moving it or use felt gliders or some other fabric to protect the wood. Sunlight can also damage wood, so keep an eye on the parts of the floor that get direct sunlight. You can use curtains or blinds to limit the sun from damaging your floors.

If you take good care of your hardwood floors, they will last a lifetime and require only periodic maintenance of buffing or refinishing. The best part of hardwood floor care is that scuffs, scratches and imperfections can be buffed out  every few years with a recoat, so that your floors will continue to look like they were just installed, unless the damage is passed the protective finish and into the wood, then you would need to have the floors re-sanded and resealed.

In addition, the following tips can help you keep your hardwood floors looking beautiful and lustrous for years:

  • When mopping, never use a wet mop or cleaners designed for vinyl or tile floors. These methods can actually make your floors look dull rather than clean. Stay away from Murphy’s oil to clean your floors also, this will only build up residue and make your floors look bad over time.
  • Dirt can abrasive to your floors, so protect them by placing mats outside each entrance, which will minimize the amount of dirt that is tracked into your home. Also, place area rugs just inside the door to help catch anything the mats may have missed.
  • Avoid scratching your hardwood floors by outfitting furniture bottoms with felt pads or plastic glides. Be sure to clean the pads or glides regularly to remove any dirt. This is especially important in the kitchen and dining room where chairs are moved frequently.
  • Direct sunlight can fade your floors over time, so consider hanging sheer window coverings to protect from intense UV rays. We all love the sun but this can damage your flooring in time.

Also, area rugs can take its toll. Even though we love area rugs seeing they compliment any room and they do help protect your floors with traffic, the sun shining on a spot with an area rug in the room will show the outline of the rug over time. for more information please contact us at info@ElmWoodFlooring.com or Call us today at 773-209-7499
