How do I Sand Wood Floors?
If you’re working on a small improvement project around your home or business and need to sand your wood floors, you will need an industrial sanding machine to cut the floor properly, also you will need an edger (a smaller, hand-held version for working the edges of your floor), spare sanding paper for both sanders – remember to get different grits, 20-40-60-80-100-120 and buffing screens, and a broom with a sweeper, and vacuum.
Before you start your hardwood floor sanding project, you will need to clean and sweep the floor to get rid of any dust or dirt, anything that will damage your floors while sanding them. Also, you will need to make sure there are no nails sticking out of the floor, they can damage your sander and sand paper!
When the floor has been prepped, you’ll need to start with a lower grit and work your way up. Use the smaller sander to work the edges around the room and make your way around the room, but you always want to start with the drum sander first, so you can clean up any marks with the edger. Using the spare sand paper or a small, hand-held sander, carefully sand all your corners – be careful not to go to deep into the wood – you want your floor to be level from wall to wall!
Depending on the abuse your floor took over the years, you will need to either buff them and just re-apply 1 coat or sand them lightly or at minimum sand and recoat the floors using water, oil (poly) or Acid If your so bold to try this pro’s product. You may have to do it several more times if the damage and scratches are more severe. If your flooring is not level, you can level it by cutting the floor on a 45/ degree angle. Never! Cut the floor board like this +, Always on a 45 / or with the gain |\| if you cut the floor this way —– and the boards are running this way |||| you will damage your floor and it will cost you more $ in the end to fix them.
