How is Bamboo Flooring Made?
How does bamboo go from the tall plant to a flat floor in your home?
While bamboo is technically a grass, it can be used like it’s a tree. It can be harvested anywhere from three years to six years after it is planted. Turning that harvested grass into a flat flooring product is a difficult job.
First, the hull is removed and the bamboo is cut into strips, which are called fillets. The strips are then milled along the sides to make them flatter and more suitable to be used as flooring material. Then, the pieces are boiled and dried to remove moisture and sugars.
After that, the bamboo can be darkened through carbonization to give it a different look.
