How to remove carpet stains

When you choose to carpet your floors, you open yourself up to the risk of carpet stains.

Fortunately, there are many ways you can remove stains once they inevitably happen to your carpet.

Don’t scrub your carpet. Instead, blot the spot and dry it, working from the inside out. Scrubbing will hurt the fibers of your carpet and help the stain get into the carpet pad. A mixture of vinegar and water can help to remove many water-soluble stains, such as:

  • mud
  • jelly
  • excrement
  • washable ink
  • berries

For tougher stains, such as blood, chocolate, mustard, vomit, and wine, try one tablespoon of ammonia in a cup of water. If it’s a wool or wool blend carpet, though, try a mild detergent with the water instead.
